Momentum Hackney AGM Is Nearly Here
We’re moving swiftly towards our AGM, Tuesday 30th October, 7.30pm, at the Pembury Centre, 1 Atkins Square, Dalston Lane, Hackney, E8 1FA. We are delighted to be joined by some great speakers to introduce campaigning and educational activities over the coming year:
- Anouska Sams & Adam Chester, London Renters Union. Hackney branch is off the ground!
- Elliot Dugdale, The World Transformed, and its long term work on political education.
- Ian Hodson, Bakers, Food & Allied Workers Union on the organising the union is supporting in McDonalds, Deliveroo, Weatherspoons and elsewhere, introduced by George Binette, Events Coordinator, Labour Party, Hackney North CLP.
- Obi Saiq, BECTU activist on strike at the Picturehouse.
- Dr Coral Jones (also Chair, Labour Party Hackney South CLP) on local threats to the NHS.
The meeting will be chaired by Lucie Scott, Labour Party and BAME activist.
We hope these intros will stimulate ideas and action from as many members as possible. All kinds of activist groups and causes contact Momentum Hackney for support and we need more people, including new people, to get involved – especially to organise campaigning events and initiatives. Lots of interesting and exciting work to be done!
At the AGM, after intros and call outs – including any you want to make – we’ll break into working
groups to plan actions. Please come along on 30th October, sign up to a working group.
The thinking of the current Steering Committee is that Momentum Hackney needs to be more member centred, and have a regular monthly assembly, on a fixed day of the month, where we plan action, take initiatives, report back on the different campaigns we are involved in, and debate urgent political issue (rather than this happening mainly through the steering committee).
The Steering Committee therefore should become a technical team whose role is to support initiatives coming from the monthly assembly – eg finances, communication tools.
This team, we suggest, needs to include:
Convenor, monthly assembly.
Digital Organiser. Website Developer.
Data Manager/Member Support.
Steering Committee Facilitator.
For more detailed descriptions of these roles below. You can nominate yourself by sending in 100 – 200 words to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please email by 29th October to give us time to print and share at the AGM on 30th October.
Momentum Hackney Steering Committee Roles
Our next Steering Committee will be voted in at the Momentum Hackney AGM.
To put yourself forward for any of the roles below please nominate yourself in 100-200 words and send to email@example.com by 29th October 2018
Convenor, Monthly Assembly
All kinds of activist groups and causes contact Momentum Hackney for support on issues
they care about. We have set up a monthly assembly in central Hackney and we need
someone to coordinate these events so that they run smoothly and become a welcoming,
effective activist hub. We need someone to liaise with the venue and speakers, identify
and contact (rotating) chairs, devise and share running orders, help breakout sessions,
consensus building and action planning
Digital Organiser (Social Media)
Are you a Facebooker, Tweeter or do Instagram? We want to raise Mohack’s collective
voice, to build our profile by supporting members to post news, issues and events through
social media platforms. We’d appreciate a Digital Organiser who can encourage friendly
online discussion and debate, post video clips and stories, and to admin the various
accounts. Great opportunity for someone who knows or wants to develop analytics.
Momentum Hackney has its own website which we would like to grow to reflect the local
activist scene and record the work we all do. We need someone to support members as
we build content, to encourage and assist members and supporters to blog and upload
and coordinate content with the Digital Organiser on our social media platforms.
Data Manager/Membership support
This is Momentum Hackney’s link to People’s Momentum, and handles data lists. Supports
the wider membership and SC to compose and send out news in regular emails across
Hackney and sometimes nationally. Responsible for data security. This person will be key
in facilitating ring rounds, and supporting others to do so. As we move closer to the
inevitable General Election, we need to consolidate and build solidarity through regular
contact with Corbyn supporters, new members and help others climb aboard.
Momentum Hackney needs funds for venue hire, speakers, promotion, travel costs to
assist members to TWT and LP conference, and we hope to achieve sums for a few paid
hours for core roles. We need to develop a ‘pay as you can’ approach to local members
and well wishers. We also need to research and map funding bodies, write applications, to
build and maintain relationships with these organisations.
This one could be a kindly figure in the background, but we’d love it if you could work with
the Fundraiser to get cash into the coffers. We need a Signatory on MH bank account, plus
book keeping and annual accounts reporting.
Steering Committee Facilitator
Our Steering Committee will need occasional meetings to reflect how Momentum Hackney
is doing – feed back on the monthly assemblies and online activities; to review MH
membership and finance. We need a Facilitator to bring people together, coordinate these
meetings and ensure the core team is supported by good communication and action plans.
