Hackney South CLP Crowdfunding To Send Delegates To Labour Conference
Hackney South & Shoreditch Constituency Labour Party have been fundraising through crowdfunding to send as many delegates as possible to Labour Conference 2018 in Liverpool. Previously the CLP had been restricted financially in sending only three members to conference as official delegates. However with the election of a new Executive Committee at last years AGM, and their pledge to make wider participation one of their priorities, the new EC have decided to use generated income to fund three additional delegate positions, bringing the guaranteed delegate numbers sent to conference to represent the CLP to six.
The EC have also decided to fund raise through crowdfunding up to a further six places. With pooled costs set by Labour nationally for travel, the delegate pass for conference cost and the EC deciding delegate accommodation costs should be covered by the CLP, a figure of roughly £500 per delegate has been sought through the crowdfund. At the last check just (before this article was published) £1070 had been raised through the crowdfund guaranteeing a further two more delegate places for the CLP.
Previous delegates to conference have highlighted the networking and political education opportunities being a delegate at Conference brings as well as the special access to the conference floor and how this allows delegates to feel like real stakeholders in the party, with decisions they take as a collective affecting Labour’s future. Other past delegates have emphasised that on occasions, a lot of votes are conducted by pure show of hands and that it is imperative for democratic representation to function properly that a CLP with as many members as Hackney South sends as many delegates as possible.
We also have a blog by a previous conference delegate who highlights why more delegates should go and why it is important that the left leaning delegates supportive of the party’s direction under Jeremy’s leadership should be voted to attend, you can read the blog here.
Please donate, if you’re able to, to the CLP crowdfund to make sure Hackney South CLP are able to send as many delegates to the Labour Conference as possible. If you are not in a position to donate, please support by sharing the crowdfunding link, https://www.gofundme.com/south-hackney-delegate-fund, and encouraging others to donate.
Hackney South and Shoreditch CLP’s delegates for conference will be picked through voting at the March CLP General Meeting, to be held on Thursday 22nd March 2018 from 19:30 at The Salvation Army Church and Community Centre, 70 Mare Street, Hackney, E8 4RT. The meeting is an All Member meeting, meaning any member of the Hackney South CLP can turn up and vote for delegates.
It is extremely important that Corbyn supporting Labour members of the CLP turn up to the meeting, on time, and vote for candidates that will represent the CLP at conference in a way that supports the Labour Party continuing to travel in the democratic and socialist trajectory as outlined and established by Jeremy’s leadership campaigns and the 2017 manifesto.
In that respect, Momentum Hackney have decided to support the Hackney South Grassroots Left Slate for conference delegates, you can find more information on who is on the slate, how the slate was formulated and why we support it here.
Momentum Hackney will be hosting a phonebank on to get out the Corbyn-supporting vote for the Hackney South CLP conference delegate meeting in order to support the HSGL Slate so as we can pick delegates that reflect the desire of the CLP and wider membership to support Jeremy Corbyn’s vision for Labour. You can find the details of the phonebank here.
